Chicago Sky star Chennedy Carter has expressed strong dissatisfaction with her ESPN ranking as the 24th-best WNBA player entering the second half of the season. ESPN’s ranking, which placed her in the top 20 percent of the league’s 144 players, didn’t sit well with Carter, who took to social media to voice her frustration.
“How do I average fewer minutes but still have stats that are among the top in the league? Yet, I’m ranked near the bottom,” Carter wrote. “This doesn’t add up. The hate is so obvious, even when it comes to my field goal percentage.”
Carter, who is the second-highest ranked player on the Chicago Sky behind rookie Angel Reese, has been having an impressive season, averaging 17.2 points per game. This comes as the WNBA enjoys increased attention this summer, largely thanks to stars like Reese and Carter’s former college rival, Caitlin Clark.
Clark, who has been a major draw for fans since her first-overall selection in April’s WNBA Draft, was a key figure in four of the most-watched women’s college basketball games of all time during her final year at Iowa. Her popularity has only grown since joining the Indiana Fever, making her a box-office attraction wherever she plays.
Carter, however, has not been shy about targeting Clark on the court. On June 1, Carter made headlines when she body-checked Clark in a move fans described as unsportsmanlike. While Carter refused to address the incident directly during a post-game press conference, she later doubled down on social media, questioning Clark’s contributions beyond her three-point shooting ability.
The tension between Carter and Clark isn’t an isolated incident. On June 16, Angel Reese committed a flagrant foul on Clark, hitting her in the head during a missed block attempt. The altercation left Clark in visible pain and sparked further controversy. Reese later criticized Clark and her team in the media, suggesting they received favorable treatment from referees.
Despite her stellar performance this season, Carter was notably absent from the WNBA All-Star Game, which featured both Clark and Reese. As the Sky prepare to return to action against the Phoenix Mercury on Thursday, they currently hold the final playoff spot, sitting three games ahead of the ninth-place Atlanta Dream.
