Angel Reese had no interest in celebrating her achievement of setting a new Chicago Sky franchise record during Thursday night’s WNBA action. The Sky faced a heavy defeat against the Phoenix Mercury as the league resumed play.
In the third quarter, Reese surpassed Sylvia Fowles’ record of 117 offensive rebounds from 2013, marking a new high for the Sky. However, despite this personal milestone, Reese was clearly frustrated by her team’s performance.
When a reporter brought up her record-setting achievement, Reese was quick to dismiss the question. “No, I don’t want to hear about no record today,” she said sharply, cutting off the reporter.
Reese was more focused on the game’s outcome and the performance of the Mercury, particularly acknowledging Brittney Griner’s impact. “She’s a great player, really efficient tonight,” Reese noted. “We didn’t follow the game plan, but we’ve got another shot at them on Sunday, and I’m looking forward to it.”
Reese also achieved her 18th double-double of the season with 11 points and 15 rebounds, but the loss was exacerbated by the absence of star guard Chennedy Carter, who missed the game due to a non-COVID-related illness. Carter had been vocal about her frustration over being ranked 24th on ESPN’s list of top WNBA players.
“Chennedy is one of the best guards in this league,” Reese said. “Her absence was felt tonight, but having her back healthy is what matters most.”
The Sky also played their first game without guard Marina Mabrey, who was traded to the Connecticut Sun before the Olympic break. Thursday’s loss pushed the Sky to a 10-15 record for the season.
Looking ahead, Reese and the Sky will face the Los Angeles Sparks on Saturday night in California before a return game against the Mercury in Phoenix. The Mercury, now 14-12, had a strong showing with Kahleah Copper leading the charge with 29 points, supported by Griner’s 23 points and Diana Taurasi’s 11.
