Taylor Fritz is counting on the return to Grand Slam competition at the US Open to reinvigorate his game after back-to-back early exits at the ATP Masters 1000 events in Canada and Cincinnati.
In his ninth main draw appearance at the US Open, Fritz is eager to be back in New York, a city and stage where he has found consistent success this year. The American has reached the quarter-finals at the Australian Open and Wimbledon and advanced to the fourth round at Roland Garros, underscoring his steady performance at the majors.
The California native, who recently secured double bronze medals at the Paris Olympics alongside Tommy Paul, is the highest-ranked American in the PIF ATP Rankings, holding the No. 12 spot. Despite his recent struggles, including losses to fellow Americans Brandon Nakashima and Sebastian Korda in Montreal and Cincinnati, Fritz remains optimistic. He’s hoping for a strong showing at the US Open to regain his form.
“Obviously really excited to be here. It’s, like, the biggest week for the U.S. players,” said Fritz, reflecting on his return to the tournament where he reached the quarter-finals last year.
“Last year, I felt like I needed a good result here because my slam performances had been poor. This year, I’ve had solid results at the slams, and I feel confident playing in these big tournaments.”
Fritz’s journey to the quarter-finals in 2023 was cut short by eventual champion Novak Djokovic, who went on to claim a record 24th Grand Slam singles title.
“It’s crazy to win that many and be that consistently good,” Fritz remarked on Djokovic’s dominance. “It speaks to how much better he is than everyone else. It’s amazing, and his discipline to never be satisfied and always strive for more is just extremely impressive.”
This year, Fritz is seeded to face No. 8 seed Casper Ruud in the quarter-finals, with a potential second-round matchup against 2021 Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini. He will kick off his US Open campaign against Argentine Camilo Ugo Carabelli on Monday.
As he steps onto the courts at Flushing Meadows, Fritz is determined to make another deep run and remind everyone why he remains a formidable force on the Grand Slam stage.
