College basketball analyst Andy Katz has high expectations for Jaxson Robinson as he heads into the 2024-25 season. The NCAA.com correspondent recently ranked Robinson as the 10th-best wing player in the nation, a ranking that sparked some debate online. This week, Katz went a step further, naming Robinson as his top breakout player for the upcoming college basketball season.
“After a productive season at BYU, Jaxson Robinson brings his scoring touch to Kentucky,” wrote NCAA.com. “The 6-foot-6 sharpshooter, named Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year, averaged 14.2 points per game and made 81 three-pointers last season. With his ability to stretch the floor and provide instant offense, Robinson looks primed to be one of Kentucky’s top scoring threats in 2024-25.”
Robinson, a graduate student entering his fifth college season, is expected to be part of head coach Mark Pope’s starting lineup from the beginning of the season. Notably, Robinson is the only player on the current Kentucky roster with prior experience playing under Pope, having spent the last two seasons together at BYU.
Since beginning his college career, Robinson has shown steady improvement each season. He started at Texas A&M in the 2020-21 season, averaging 2.1 points across 14 games, before transferring to Arkansas for the 2021-22 season, where he averaged 3.4 points in 16 games. His production truly took off after transferring to BYU, where he played under Pope. As a full-time starter in the 2022-23 season, Robinson averaged 8.5 points in 28.1 minutes per game, making a three-pointer in 15 consecutive games at one point.
In the 2023-24 season, Robinson continued to elevate his game, becoming a Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year and an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention. Despite slightly reduced minutes compared to the previous season, Robinson’s scoring surged, averaging 14.2 points in 26.4 minutes per game. He posted career-high shooting percentages from both the field (42.6%) and beyond the arc (35.4%), reaching double-digit scoring in 25 games.
Robinson was listed as the top breakout player on Katz’s list for the 2024-25 season, followed by players like Matthew Murrell (Ole Miss), Meechie Johnson (Ohio State), and Jackson Shelstad (Oregon), among others.
