George Russell has hinted that Mercedes’ new updates could have a significant impact. Although the team introduced a new floor for the car, it was removed for key events in Belgium. Russell stated, “I’m confident that at Zandvoort we’ll revert to the new aero package and adjust the car’s mechanical setup.”
Mercedes’ Trackside Engineering Director, Andrew Shovlin, acknowledged challenges with the car’s performance in hotter conditions. He explained, “In Austria and Budapest, we struggled with stability, mainly due to the car generating more heat in the tires compared to others. We need to address this issue, but it will require a series of developments rather than a single aero update. Our goal is to enhance our competitiveness against teams like McLaren and Max [Verstappen] on high-temperature circuits.”
These improvements could mean Mercedes might start taking points away from McLaren, who have been a significant rival to Red Bull this season. With Mercedes claiming victory in three of the last four races and aggressively pursuing more wins, the competition between McLaren and Mercedes could open up opportunities for Red Bull to solidify their position at the top.
